Youth Leadership Harrison County Retreat A Hit With Teens

Other Press Coverage

Leadership Harrison County's (LHC) fourth annual youth retreat held at O'Bannon Woods State Park on Aug. 24-26 was a fantastic experience for local youth from area high schools. One of several LHC projects, Youth Leadership Harrison County (YLHC), has been joining with Gerdon Youth Center (GYC) for four years to provide a program for local youth that will benefit the community by working with teens 14-18 years of age.

YouthYLHC is structured after LHC's own adult program, which encompasses the concept of servant leadership. The adult program runs from October through graduation in May each year. More than 200 area leaders are LHC graduates. In August and September, the LHC program recruits members from businesses in the community and provides classes on diversity, team building, learning styles, and structure of the local government. YLHC acts in much the same way.

In March or April of each year, LHC holds a golf scramble to raise funds, alternating at Old Capital Golf in Corydon or Chariot Run, the Caesars Indiana golf course, managed by Director Jeff Krohn. During the summer, the recruiting process begins. In August, the 2½ day retreat takes place at O'Bannon Woods, in which the youth are exposed to team building exercises, mentoring processes, and rope building skills. In Sept, Oc.t, Nov., and Dec., the youth meet monthly with business leaders, facilitators, or politicians to complete the program requirements in order to graduate.

Next spring an entirely new program, Sim Soc, has been added. Sim Soc is a simulated society program that teaches youth and adults real life learning experiences. This year's youth participating in the retreat, pictured at O'Bannon Woods State Park, are: Todd Lewis, Amber Smith, Brett Dawson, Vince Cecil, Zack Dixon, Tyler Best, Michael Wiseman, Sarah Heath, Will Hambley, Justin Marlow, and Ricky Poindexter.

StaffLHC would like to thank the youth, counselors, leaders, and facilitators that worked so hard to make the retreat a success. The counselors pictured are: Mike Zink, Military serviceman; Ethel Hopkins, LHC Board member/Slot Dept Trainer Caesars Indiana; Brent Lewis, Caver/Casino Host Caesars Indiana; and Jenny Best, GYC Exec director. Counselors not pictured are Marilyn Faulkenburg, LHC Board member/College instructor; Brian Hambley, Caver/Premed Tulane; and Wendy Swisher, HR Director/Facilitator.
